Mitaka Dimov designed this dark apartment living room around an uplifting message, “Stay Positive”. A variety of materials are layered for richness and depth, enhancing the sense of contrast created by the black and white color theme. Note how the media area includes plush black sofas and a glossy black wall, tucked away in a corner without much natural light. The lightweight white dining set takes full advantage of the sunlight it receives through the luminous curtains.
What happens when artwork takes center stage in a home? Rather than adding art as an afterthought, even a single favored piece can easily serve as a perfect anchor for the rest of the room. The following images explore a variety of ways to make home artwork serve as more than just a focal point, but as a unifying feature within an interior design. The techniques employed here are clever and diverse: some of these interior artwork ideas perfectly complement the color palette, others unify the design theme, and some enhance the character of the structure itself.
This Image Known for her exquisite natural wallpaper motifs, Marthe Armitage is the grande dame of hand-produced prints and this design is no exception. Here, heavy milky white linen upholstery and an artisan wool rug keep the look textural and fresh. The massive brick wall has a barnlike feel, even though the house is a new-build. As well as creating a rustic look, the brickwork contrasts wonderfully with the deep purple of the upholstery. Cream furniture acts as a highlighter, creating a perfectly balanced scheme.
